On the occasion marking the 100 days to the inaugural Abeokuta 10km Road Race, the brain behind the concept, Bukola Olopade on Thursday unfolded the plans for the event and also the sponsors.

Olopade is the Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Ltd, the sports marketing firm that is spreading fitness and road races across Nigeria. He organises the Lagos Marathon as well as the Remo Ulta Road Race.

He revealed that the Abeokuta Road Race which will be flagged off at 6am on November 3 will commence from Iyana Oloke area of the ancient city and pass through some major monuments in the capital city of Ogun State before terminating at the Alake Palace.

However, the race route does not include the popular Olumo Rock, the iconic granite rock from which the city derived its origin.

Olopade explained that the route to Olumo Rock would have altered the approved IAAF distance approved for the race.

The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) have also certified the race.

Race Master, Olopade pointed out that since races of such kind are also meant to promote tourism, the organisers plan to have a foreign runners visit the Olumo Rock which has been given a facelift and whose peak can also be reached through cable cars.

At a press conference in Abeokuta, Olopade unveiled JAC Motors as the title sponsors as well as other supporting sponsors like Rite Foods Limited, QMB Builders Mart, JAC Motors, Bet9ja, Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Confederation of African Athletics, Landwey Limited and Nilayo Sports Management Limited.
